| SHe: Singles serving together around
the world in sustainable humanitarian development |
 |
SHe's Mission and History
SHe was formed in late 2008 by a group of friends in Washington,
D.C., who wanted a meaningful alternative to large single’s activities
like cruises or other events. This group created the Singular
Humanitarian experience (SHe)—a volunteer-run organization with a
two-fold mission: facilitate meaningful and unforgettable opportunities
for singles to serve together anywhere in the world and provide
sustainable humanitarian development projects.
SHe volunteers are principally, but not exclusively, single members
of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church; www.lds.org) in their
mid-20s to late 30s who are interested in using their talents, skills,
and time to provide significant service as well as enrich their lives
through personal and cultural interactions.
SHe's inaugural expedition to
Guatemala in August 2009 brought together 89 volunteers for eight days.
Possibly the largest gathering of LDS singles united in int'l
humanitarian service at one time, the group participated in a
multi-faceted project serving the Mayan Q’eqchi’ in the remote and lush
Polochic Valley.
SHe's Alliances
SHe worked together with CHOICE Humanitarian (www.choicehumanitarian.org),
a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with more than 20 years of experience
in combating poverty by focusing on sustainable village development in
Guatemala. The project was also supported logistically and financially
by LDS Humanitarian Services in Guatemala.
SHe's future plans
Due to the overwhelming success of the 2009 expedition, SHe has
expanded to create local chapter organizations in Washington, D.C.;
Mesa, Arizona; Salt Lake City/Provo, Utah; Palo Alto/San Francisco,
California. Again, we are working together with CHOICE Humanitarian in
2010 to return to the Polochic Valley in Guatemala (July 10-18), Bolivia
(August 7-15), and to Nepal (October 29-November 7).
